Vernon Township, MI, United States (AHN) – A train carrying 20,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid derailed in central Michigan Thursday night, forcing the evacuation of residents near the accident site.
The Canadian National Railway train car overturned about 7 p.m. 20 miles west-southwest of Flint in Shiawassee County.
Officials reported three cars still remain tipped over while eight of derailed cars were transported from the site.
Railroad spokesman Patrick Waldron said local officials ordered the evacuations as a precaution.
Authorities reportedly went door to door and safely evacuated all residents in the affected area. At least 12 families were taken to a local hotel. Residents are expected to return home sometime Friday.
Investigators continue looking into the accident, however the cause has not been determined and it remains unknown exactly how many people were affected.
The accident also forced the delay of an Amtrak passenger train.
