Guadalupe, Mexico (AHN) – The last remaining police officer in the Mexican border town of Guadalupe still remains missing after armed gunmen stormed her home and kidnapped her last week. The town has been left with no police force.
Witnesses say gunmen torched Erika Gandara’s home and two cars before they abducted her last Thursday. Gandara was the lone law enforcement officer in the small region after all of her colleagues were either killed or resigned.
The brave 28-year-old women patrolled the town of 9,000 residents alone since June. Now that she is gone and there is an international spotlight on the town the Mexican government has sent in troops to patrol and investigate Gandara’s abduction.
The abduction came about a month after the female police chief of another city was executed by drug cartel thugs.
Guadalupe is three miles from the U.S. border and 40 miles from (40 miles) from Ciudad Juarez, the centre of drug smuggling operations into the United States. Since Mexico’s president launched a 2006 crackdown on drug cartels 30,000 people have died in drug related violence.
