Daytona Beach, FL, United States (AHN Sports) – Jorg Bergmeister, a driver who has never qualified a car at Daytona International Speedway and who is with a team that plans to run only the Rolex 24 At Daytona, took the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche Riley to the pole position for Saturday’s race.
Bergmeister broke the track record for Daytona Prototypes on the 3.56-mile DIS road course, turn a lap of 128.033 mph, topping David Donohue’s 127.472 mph effort from 2009.
“This is (Flying Lizard’s) first time with a DP and it’s very impressive,” Bergmeister said. “I honestly didn’t expect this. I was hoping for a top-five result.”
It was his first Grand-Am pole run in a car purchased from Brumos Racing; the chassis that won the 2009 Rolex 24.
Late in the 15-minute, group-qualifying session, the No. 10 Chevrolet Dallara of Max Angelelli was fastest on the board (127.989 mph) giving Bergmeister the inspiration for one final go-for-it lap.
Angelelli, a former Rolex 24 and Grand-Am DP championp, was happy to be on the front row.
“We have a good car and a good engine, and it’s good to be on the front row,” he said. “That’s a good feeling.”
Rounding out the top five qualifiers were the No. 01 BMW Riley (127.486 mph), followed by the No. 8 Ford Riley (127.840 mph) and the No. 02 BMW Riley (127.774 mph).
The Nos. 02 and 01 cars are owned by Chip Ganassi. His cars won the Rolex 24 three consecutive times from 2006-08 and have finished second the last two years.
“It doesn’t mean anything because it’s such a long race,” said Bergmeister. “It’s nice for Flying Lizard with their DP; it just shows how good a team they are. For the outcome of the race, it doesn’t mean anything.”
