Regarding the recent opinion letter: “Flood insurance swamps finances”: I had a similar experience when I received a letter notifying me that a new survey determined that my house was now in the flood plane and the cost reflected that change. Because I had a garage constructed a few years ago, I had investigated the exact location of the flood plane on my property and I knew it hadn’t moved. So I went to the courthouse to see what I could find out about the situation. It seems that aerial photos are used to determine if houses are in the flood plane and due to large trees around my house, the house itself was not visible in the new photo. It seems that if your house can’t be located in the photo, the powers that be assume you are in the flood plane and it’s up to you to prove otherwise. With the help of a gentleman at the courthouse, we found another photo that showed my house and when we superimposed the flood plane map over it, my house was clearl Copyright 2010 The News-Review.
