Corinn Foley stood with an empty shopping cart at Walmart in Amherst on Friday surrounded by baby dolls and dress-up clothes, trying to decide which toys her 21-month-old daughter Laylani would like best. “She loves babies,” Foley said, smiling. “She likes to pretend to be a mom.” For Foley, picking out the perfect gift for her daughter was more than just a typical holiday shopping experience; it was a sign that this Christmas would be happier than last year’s. Foley is one of 18 women given the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts for their children this week with money from the Santa Fund. The Santa Fund is a holiday assistance program created by the publisher of The Telegraph nearly 50 years ago. The Salvation Army and Nashua Pastoral Care Center – a nonprofit organization that helps families at risk for homelessness – help The Telegraph in the distribution of these donations. The women, all of whom live with their families in transitional housing provided by the Pastoral Care Center, were given Walmart gift cards and brought to the store Friday to shop for their children.
