Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) – Bombs that exploded inside a minibus, on a road and near a funeral ceremony tent killed 53 people and wounded 142 others in Baghdad on Thursday.
Most of the fatalities, 48, were from the funeral ceremony in the Shuala neighborhood, according to the interior ministry. Some 121 mourners in the Shiite district were also wounded in the 1:30 p.m. car bomb attack.
The roadside and bus bombing killed five and wounded 21.
The force of the blast destroyed many cars near the funeral site and shattered windows of nearby homes.
Policemen and soldiers who rushed to the scene were stoned and sent away by a crowd angered by their failure to protect them from the attack. The soldiers, however, returned with reinforcements and dispersed the mob.
The spate of bombings Thursday followed a similar attack last week when three car bombs detonated 20 minutes apart and killed 45 pilgrims and wounded 150 others in Karbala.
